WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE?
The weather on Velebit Mountain is highly unpredictable. Snow, rain and strong winds possible at any time of the year. This is why carrying the right equipment is essential.
From late May to early October you can expect more sunny and dry days, although occasional rain or snow may still occur. During this time, be prepared to walk on slippery or wet surfaces for longer periods.
Temperatures can range from 0°C to 20°C (32°F to 68°F), so dressing in layers is important. Nights can get quite chilly, so be sure to pack warm clothing.
High winds, especially the powerful “bura” can affect the exposed ridges, reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h, particularly in colder months. While summer winds are lighter, gusts can still be quite intense in exposed places.
Guides are trained to handle severe weather, so always follow their instructions if conditions worsen during your hike.
When is the best time to hike in Croatia?
The best time to hike in Croatia is typically during the spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, with comfortable temperatures for hiking, and the trails are less crowded compared to the summer months.
Summer (July and August) can be hot, but it’s still a great time for coastal hikes in the early mornings or late afternoons. Winter (December to February) is best suited for those who enjoy snowshoeing or winter hiking in the mountains, although some trails may be closed due to snow.
